We started the class with an informal bow in and then started our first class with traditional Junbi Undo warm up exercises. After a quick break we moved onto basic techniques, punches, elbow strikes and a few kicks. As it was the first class we were keen to cover as many things as possible so we demonstrated the first kata of the Goju Ryu curriculum, Gekisai Dai Ichi, followed by a brief introduction to the Chi-ishi. We then warmed back up again with punches and kicks moving up and down the dojo in zenkutsu dachi. We then discovered that practicing the 3 basic blocks is a great way to tie people up in knots.
We briefly split the class, providing an opportunity for the more experienced students to practice San Dan Gi with Louise, while the beginners ran through the pattern of Sanchin kata, followed by a demonstration. This was followed by a few minutes of hitting the various punch bags and focus mitts. Finally we demonstrated a couple of self defense moves, with take downs.
Our hope was to introduce lots of aspects of what we will practice over time and most importantly, to have some fun. I hope the smiling faces were a reflection of this and not a polite way of saying "they're all mad". Until next time, arigato gozaimasu.
