Goju ryu is a traditional style of karate, founded in the early 20th Century in Okinawa, Japan by Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953). The name Goju comes from the martial arts text the Bubishi. Go, meaning hard, refers to closed hand techniques or straight linear attack, whilst Ju, meaning soft, refers to open hand techniques and circular movements.
Emphasis is given to the twelve kata which provide the bedrock of the curriculum, in particular, Sanchin kata. Goju ryu practices methods that include body strengthening, cardio work outs, stretching, conditioning and partner drills.
Both circular and linear movements are featured in the curriculum. Goju ryu combines hard striking attacks such as kicks and punches with softer open hand circular techniques for attacking, blocking and controlling the opponent, including locks, grappling, takedowns and throws.
